Belarus signals stronger trade, tech ties with Tanzania amid major investment push

A senior trade envoy from Belarus has called for deeper business engagement with Tanzania, as bilateral relations gain pace amid rising investment and industrial cooperation.

Mikalai Barysevich, Director General for Export Promotion, made the remarks during a visit to the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade), emphasising that trust and direct engagement remain central to unlocking trade opportunities between the two countries.

“I felt privileged to come and see with my own eyes, to get acquainted with the people,” he said, noting long-term partnerships are built on mutual understanding and direct interaction.

His visit comes as Tanzania and Belarus step up cooperation through high-level engagements, joint committees and private sector partnerships.

In January 2026, a major agreement valued at approximately Tshs 18 trillion ($7 billion) was signed between Tanzania’s Kiluwa Group and Belarusian firms to establish local manufacturing of tractors, agricultural machinery, buses and trucks, positioning Tanzania as a potential regional production hub.

Barysevich said there remains “huge room for maneuver” in expanding trade, citing limited awareness among businesses in both countries about available opportunities.

“We should know much more about each other,” he said, highlighting the role of export promotion institutions in connecting companies and facilitating market entry.

Trade between the two countries currently includes Belarusian exports such as potash fertilisers, petroleum products, agricultural machinery, measuring equipment and pharmaceuticals.

Tanzania, in turn, exports agricultural produce including coffee, nuts, fruits, vegetables and flowers.

The envoy said Belarus is ready to deepen cooperation by pairing exports with technology transfer, particularly in agriculture and manufacturing.

“We are coming with an open heart and open hands. We are ready to go as far as Tanzania is ready,” he said.
